Tuesday Travel Guide: Phoenix/Scottsdale- Where to Eat

Hey Guys!

I don't really think of Arizona as a foodie mecca of sorts but I won't lie, I've had some pretty awesome noms whenever I've visited.

Where to Eat

Afternoon Tea at The Phoenician was pretty amazing. Sadly, we were the only people there but that also meant that the service was pretty out of this world. Definitely a fun experience if you're into afternoon tea like I am! Was pricier than a lot of tea experiences but the fact that it was in a luxury hotel kind of says it all.

Sunday Brunch at Zuzu was a lot of fun. The menu has some great traditional "brunchy" items and a few fun experimental pieces. The grits were pretty delicious (if you love grits like me). We grabbed drinks at the bar while we waited and explored the colorful grounds of the Hotel Valley Ho. Such a fun brunch!

Elements inside Sanctuary at Camelback is one of the most beautiful restaurants I've been to in the Southwest. The restaurant has HUGE windows that capture the most amazing sunsets over the mountains in the evening. The menu was definitely pricey BUT they had a pretty inexpensive prefix menu with three courses that was just the right price. The food was delicious and that sunset is no joke. It was absolutely AMAZING. I would go there just for the sunset alone but luckily the food was pretty fantastic too.

(I would have loved to include a photo of the amazing sunset; however, the restaurant was a little snooty about photos so it was hard enough to take a picture of my dinner!)

Sweets
Because I keep visiting in the summer, ice cream is always a definite must... To be fair, ice cream is a must on any trip for me but when it's over 110, it's basically a requirement, right?

Gelato Spot by Old Town Scottsdale had a big selection and was absolutely delicious. My first gelato experience was in Venice and this stuff came pretty close. I've always had a soft spot for pistachio since I was little (such a weird child asking for pistachio at Baskin Robbins) and theirs was perfection.

Sweet Republic was on my "Must Eat" list ever since I saw it on a few lists for top ice cream places in the country. We had the famed Toffee Banofi Sundae and I could have eaten two. This sundae was just so amazing. They had a few extra goodies by the register like salted caramels (YUM). This is definitely a place I have to stop every single visit to the Scottsdale area.

I'm a huge country music fan so visiting Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row was non-negotiable. It's in a part of Scottsdale that feels like spring break with loud music and crazy college students drinking up a storm. We went on a midweek night for dinner and the food was pretty good. I loved the decor and the music and the atmosphere (the bars across the street were out of control so I was super happy to be in a more chill environment). My only regret- if we had been there the next night instead, we would have gotten a surprise acoustic set from LUKE BRYAN who randomly stopped by on a Thursday. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat????

My first trip to Scottsdale, my friend and I grabbed lunch at a fun little spot in Old Town Scottsdale called Cien Agaves. The restaurant was cute and colorful and the food was pretty yummy. Even better, there was a Groupon. We really do love our Groupons!

I usually skip breakfast or eat something fast and semi portable at work. I know, I know. That's horrible. Fortunately, on vacation, I'm the opposite. I don't start my day without some sort of breakfast. Even if it's just pastries from the coffee shop around the corner, I make sure I have something substantial before a day of sightseeing. We had asked our driver one day for a recommendation and he told us Breakfast Club. He even dropped us right at their door. I'm so glad for driver recommendations because they're almost always pretty amazing. This one was no exception. Big selection and delicious choices!

Tuesday Travel Guide: Phoenix/Scottsdale- Where to Play

Good morning!

There are lots of interesting things to see and do around Phoenix and Scottsdale. On both trips, we opted to just kind of chill and keep sightseeing to a minimum but I still felt like we did quite a bit.

Where to Play

A huge indoor/outdoor shopping plaza with almost every shop I could imagine.

Nice artsy area with lots of cool coffee shops and things to see along the way.

A really cool Frank Lloyd Wright home.

The name says it all.
We went on a day it was closed but still got some awesome photos from outside the gate!

Cool Western shopping plaza with lots of shops and restaurants.

If you haven't heard of Last Chance and you're a bargain shopper, you are seriously missing out. Last Chance is basically the end point for Nordstrom discounts. The items are insanely cheap and the place is super crowded. I've gotten some awesome Toms wedges for like $20 and all kinds of tops for $4 and they're all great quality. Definitely a must stop if you're in Scottsdale!

Tuesday Travel Guide: Phoenix/Scottsdale- Where to Stay

Hey guys!

Phoenix and Scottsdale have some really nice hotels.

Of course there are the standard properties that you expect in any downtown area but there are also some sprawling resorts with amazing views and some adorable boutique properties with cool retro vibes. I've stayed in both the standard chain hotel and a sweet little boutique property but I also got to visit some of the other beauties that the area has to offer.

Where to Stay

My first visit we stayed at the The Scott Resort (formerly the Firesky). We absolutely loved the pool area; there was a larger one (full of kids) and a smaller, more secluded one. We even sat around the pool at night because it was just so pretty and relaxing! Our room was cute and had a nice little balcony for relaxing. The resort has a huge open lobby with a restaurant and bar area. They also have complimentary bikes you can use! The location was wonderful and really close to the Old Town Scottsdale area. It's also pretty close to all the shops and restaurants. So convenient! They even offer complimentary transportation for the shopping areas and Old Town; we didn't move our car once!

My second visit with my cousin, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Phoenix. It was pretty standard but the room was really nice and the hotel was very comfortable. They also had some pitchers of really great flavored water, perfect for the hot days. I think my favorite feature of this hotel was definitely the location.

On both trips, I got to swing by two pretty beautiful properties. The Phoenician was absolutely gorgeous, the property was beautiful and looked super luxurious. I would love to stay here for a spa weekend or something really luxe.

We also visited the Hotel Valley Ho which I thought was just the cutest place full of retro charm. One of my friends loves this hotel so much she got married here and the pictures were stunning!

Sanctuary at Camelback was really beautiful and we had plenty of time to wander before dinner. So much glass around the property to let in all the gorgeous views you can take in at once! Not to mention those amazing sunsets.

See you tomorrow for some great places to play and things to do in Phoenix and Scottsdale!

Tuesday Travel Guide: Phoenix/Scottsdale

Hey blog world!

So I'm reformatting a lot of things on the blog. I decided to remove a lot of older posts and redo them in a more user friendly, easy to follow way.

That said, welcome to Tuesday Travel Guides! Each month I'm featuring a new destination that we I may or may not have posted about in the past. Rather than giving a big old cluster of whatever I did each day, I'm putting together an easy to follow guide for each location.

This month we are heading to Phoenix & Scottsdale.

I have a habit of going to Arizona when it's pretty hot out. My first mini roadtrip to Scottsdale was in the dead of summer. People would ask us what we were doing there and we would just shrug and tell them we're from Vegas where it's maybe only a few degrees cooler. Frankly, when it's over 100 out, it all feels the same to me!

The best part about traveling to sweltering heat on a weekday is that the prices were really really awesome. We got a great deal on a nice room at a cute little boutique hotel and there were Groupons galore. We got some much needed pool time and everything was quiet and there were no crowds. If you don't mind the pretty basic not sure what I'm doing original post, feel free to check it out here!

My second visit was another quick overnighter with my cousin and since we're both foodies, it was really all about the food. We saw a couple of cool sights, met up with some great friends, and just wandered somewhat aimlessly for a couple days.

Each week will be a new post on great places to stay, play, or dine in each city so by the end of the month, you've got a full itinerary ready to go. Or at least some fun recommendations. If you have any you'd like to share, let me know in the comments!
