Scottsdale

So last weekend (and by weekend I mean Wednesday and Thursday), Amanda and I went to Scottsdale for a quick overnight jaunt. We got a great deal at Firesky Resort & Spa on Expedia. I picked this particular resort partly because of the great price, the gorgeous pool, and also because Kimpton properties offer a LOT of services and amenities. There was a late afternoon wine hour (and some delicious prickly pear lemonade for you nondrinkers like me), s'mores kits and fire pits at night, free bike rentals, and a car service for anything within a 3-mile radius. We used the car service like crazy (tipping every time, of course) and probably saved about $80 on cab fares.

The drive there was about 5.5 hours of narrow roads and we left at 5AM. We grabbed lunch at Cien Agaves in Old Town Scottsdale and topped it off with some treats at Gelato Spot. I had researched in advance and had Groupons for both!

We decided to check out the hotel pool after seeing if an early check-in was available (it was). The rooms are quite nice, there is a ton of parking right outside each building and each corridor is only accessible with a room key. Our room had a nice little balcony for lounging and reading. We headed to the hotel pool for a few hours and there was lots of seating all around the two pool areas.

After some sunning, we got ready for dinner and too the car to Sanctuary Resort to have dinner at Elements. We got there early so we walked around the resort and took in the view. While the resort was lovely, I am so glad I picked Firesky because of the gorgeous pool and all the fabulous amenities. Additionally, the demographic at our resort was a lot more mixed so we didn't feel out of place at all. The restaurant provided an amazing view of the sunset and the food was amazing as well. While the restaurant was a bit more splurgey (that's not a word is it), we were saving so much on everything else that we didn't mind. To make things even better, there was a summer three course prixe fix menu for $39 and I had my handy dandy Open Table check with me too. I don't really have many photos from inside on my phone since the resort had a "no cellphone" policy inside...

We were pretty tired from the day (I had been awake since 1:30AM for some odd reason) and decided to roast some s'mores and read by the pool for a bit before retiring early.

The next morning we took our driver's advice and went to The Breakfast Club for breakfast. We had asked for something close to Scottsdale Fashion Square because we wanted to get in a little bit of shopping and were told this was THE place to go. I ordered the Huevos Con Masa which came with a delicious cornbread. From here we walked to Fashion Square, passing by the riverfront. I had called the front desk for a late check-out already so we had a little time to shop before having the car pick us up at the mall.

After changing and checking out, the car took us over to the Phoenician for afternoon tea (another Open Table check here). The tea room is in the lobby with a gorgeous view of the pool. Amanda had never done afternoon tea before and had been a bit skeptical when I warned her that it's a full meal and not to eat too much at breakfast so she could fully enjoy it. She is now an afternoon tea convert! I'm not going to go on and on about the tea, here are the pics.

By now it was time to go back to get my car and head out of town. I decided to take a different route home that was a bit longer but provided larger roads (one lane with no shoulder sucks). It also took us through Lake Havasu and past Laughlin (future weekend plans) so we managed to familiarize ourselves with the routes there and enjoyed another beautiful sunset on the drive home. Scottsdale was a lot of fun and I know there were a bunch of places we didn't hit up so we may need to venture back again soon!
